How to Develop Your Professional Style

Style is timeless and unique to each individual. In my opinion, the key to great style is about developing a strong sense of self and then choosing to express it through fashion i.e. your clothes and accessories. But what if you don’t know what your personal style is, nevertheless incorporating it for the workplace? Before you rush out to buy new style essentials for your work wardrobe, below are a few strategies I recommend to learn more about the clothing that suits you.

  1. Evaluate your closet. Over time your sense of style or clothing you like will change. As a result, it is a good idea to identify items you want to keep versus items that you feel no longer match your professional style. By assessing your wardrobe, you can decide what clothing you want to build on versus what you want to get rid of.

  2. Create a style mood board. Designing a mood board, specifically on Pinterest is a great way to gain inspiration for developing your professional style.  After you pick out a few images that you like,  you can organize them to reflect a specific mood or vibe you want your clothing to reflect. For example, if you’re feeling “boss vibes” you can create a board that showcases blazers, power suits (my absolute favorite) or statement blouses. Through pictures you can visualize a professional style that best suits you. For inspiration you can check out my Pinterest page here.
  3. Create a staple or capsule wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe is a collection of basics that you can mix and match to create endless looks without much effort. I call them staple pieces because they withstand the test of time and can be worn for many years to come. Examples of staple items include, midi black dresses, black pants or trousers, a white button up shirt or blouse, a black blazer, dark blue skinny jeans (for casual Fridays), and black skirt. From these pieces you can build a solid wardrobe with a sprinkle of statement pieces for your work attire.

Finding your personal style isn’t something you can do overnight, but with the tips provided, you can at least start the journey with a solid foundation.  Let me know if this post was helpful!
